IceGov

Open-source governance for Apache Iceberg lakehouses.

§ 01

Problem

Iceberg gives you snapshots, schema evolution, and partitioning — but no opinion on governance.

Teams end up writing one-off scripts for policy, compaction, snapshot lifecycle, and encryption, then re-writing them when something drifts.

There was no batteries-included, vendor-neutral way to govern an Iceberg lakehouse as code.

§ 02

Architecture

Policy-as-code engine driven from a Git repository — every governance rule has a commit history.

Lifecycle controller for compaction, snapshot expiration, orphan-file cleanup, and partition statistics.

Pluggable encryption + NLU surface so non-technical owners can query and review policy in plain language.

§ 03

Approach

Open source from day one, Apache 2.0, no vendor capture.

Keep the operational surface boring: declarative config, predictable cron, observable everything.

Stay engine-agnostic — IceGov runs alongside Snowflake Horizon, Spark, Trino, or anything that speaks Iceberg.

§ 04

Impact

License — open source from day one
Apache 2.0
Runs alongside Snowflake Horizon, Spark, or Trino
Engine-neutral
